Walking around Icon of the Seas, you might be surprised at how spacious it feels, even when at full capacity. During our summer cruise, the ship was bustling with guests, including many children. Yet, areas like the Royal Promenade, the pool deck, and the show venues never felt overcrowded. While you won’t have the ship entirely to yourself, the crowd density on this vessel is notably lighter compared to other Royal Caribbean ships.

On Icon of the Seas, the design offers ample space to accommodate everyone comfortably, and it truly makes a difference. The ship’s expansive layout ensures that even with a full passenger count, there’s plenty of room to move around, making the experience feel less crowded.
Royal Caribbean tackled the crowding issue by implementing destination elevators on Icon of the Seas. These elevators are designed to streamline passenger movement and reduce wait times. Often, waiting for an elevator on a cruise ship can be frustrating, and Royal Caribbean has humorously referred to these delays as “microwave minutes,” highlighting how long they can feel.

If you’ve used elevators on other cruise ships, you’ll likely notice a significant improvement in wait times on Icon of the Seas. The new destination elevators enhance efficiency and streamline passenger movement, making the experience much smoother and faster.
Shows you’ll want to see again
Royal Caribbean has a well-earned reputation for offering top-notch entertainment at sea, and with Icon of the Seas, they’ve surpassed expectations. While the shows weren’t fully prepared for the maiden voyage, I had the opportunity to experience them all on this trip. The range of performances on this ship is, without a doubt, the most impressive I’ve ever encountered in one place.

The production of The Wizard of Oz in the Royal Theater is, without question, the finest cruise ship show not originally seen on Broadway. Inspired by the classic 1939 film, Royal Caribbean has crafted a remarkable performance featuring breathtaking visuals, a talented cast, and beloved songs that resonate with audiences. As a fan of shows with engaging storylines, experiencing The Wizard of Oz on Icon of the Seas was truly a delight, showcasing Royal Caribbean’s distinct and impressive interpretation.
Icon of the Seas presents several exceptional signature shows, such as Aqua Action! in the AquaTheater and Starburst in Absolute Zero. While Royal Caribbean is known for its aqua and ice performances, the shows on Icon of the Seas highlight the most impressive tricks and advancements developed over the years.

The live music on Icon of the Seas was truly remarkable and worth highlighting. The ship features a rotating lineup of talented musicians, and during our cruise, standout performers like Jennifer Hart in the Schooner Bar and Kevin Philip in the Pub left a lasting impression. Their exceptional performances made it a priority for me to attend their shows every night.
The new Dueling Pianos bar is a fantastic addition, especially if you’re visiting with friends. The two pianists interact with the audience, creating a vibrant and entertaining environment filled with laughs and classic songs.
Catching the first show on Icon of the Seas will leave you eager to experience the rest. The entertainment is truly captivating and keeps you wanting more.
The best included food in the fleet
On Icon of the Seas, the discussion about the value of specialty restaurants shifts. While many Royal Caribbean ships offer basic and limited dining options, the specialty restaurants on this ship stand out, making them a more attractive choice.
On Icon of the Seas, the dining experience is exceptional, with high-quality and diverse complimentary options. Many passengers found these included dining choices so satisfying that they opted to forgo the extra-cost specialty restaurants.
Icon of the Seas unveils innovative dining experiences, including the Aquadome Market, Royal Caribbean’s first food hall. This unique venue offers a diverse selection of five cuisines and extended hours, going beyond the typical late-night pizza options.

Icon of the Seas enhances the dining experience with several standout features. Pearl Cafe offers 24-hour grab-and-go snacks, providing both healthy options and indulgent treats.
El Loco Fresh on the pool deck and the Windjammer buffet, which now includes steak and lobster, elevate classic dining.
While the destination elevators are a highlight, the exceptional quality of the included dining options is a close second.
Elevated dining worth the $200 price tag
After praising the quality of the included food, I must mention how impressive the Empire Supper Club experience is.
When Royal Caribbean revealed that Icon of the Seas would feature a specialty restaurant costing $200 per person, many were skeptical. However, Royal Caribbean insisted this would be more than just another dining venue.
Empire Supper Club offers a three-hour dining experience that blends food, cocktails, and entertainment. Supper clubs are designed to immerse guests in a complete performance, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the entire experience.
The jazz music was lovely, and each course came with a special cocktail. It was exciting to see what dish would come next, and the service felt very personal because the venue is small. There’s only one seating each night.
To show how much I enjoyed it: Royal Caribbean invited me to try it for free the first time, but I liked it so much that I paid to do it again the following week.

Much like choosing a special evening at a top restaurant in a major city, Empire Supper Club on Icon of the Seas provides a unique and upscale dining experience that sets itself apart from the usual cruise ship offerings. This exclusive night out surpasses typical onboard dining, offering a memorable experience that you won’t find on any other cruise.
Icon retains fan favorites
Despite its many new innovations, Icon of the Seas maintains the distinct “Royal Caribbean DNA” that loyal fans of the cruise line will recognize and appreciate. From the start of Icon’s development, Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley emphasized that the ship would blend “tradition, evolution, and revolution.”
This approach guarantees that while Icon of the Seas introduces exciting new features, it also remains true to the company’s core values and traditions. The beloved familiar elements are still there, but with thoughtful upgrades and fresh ideas that elevate the cruise experience to new heights.

Icon of the Seas brings back some of the favorite dining and bar options that Royal Caribbean guests have come to love, but with notable enhancements. Icon features stalwart restaurants like Sorrento’s Pizza, Chops Grille, and the Windjammer buffet, now in their best iterations yet. The quality and variety offered at these venues make dining a truly enjoyable experience.
Alongside these familiar spots, the ship also boasts popular bars like Boleros, the Schooner Bar, and the Lime and Coconut. These classic venues are complemented by new bars, offering even more options for relaxation and enjoyment.
The Central Park neighborhood, a signature feature from the Oasis Class ships, is also present on Icon of the Seas. However, it has been refined and elevated compared to its predecessors, providing a beautifully serene retreat amidst the bustling activity of the ship.
There’s always room for improvement
If you were to ask Royal Caribbean, they would likely acknowledge that there are areas where Icon of the Seas could improve. No cruise ship is perfect, and there are definitely aspects that could be enhanced.
For travelers who typically book suites, the Oasis Class ships might still offer a more appealing option. The suites on Oasis Class vessels are generally more spacious and luxurious. Additionally, the suite lounge on Icon of the Seas feels somewhat cramped, which might be a drawback for those who are used to more expansive areas.

When it comes to cabins on Icon of the Seas, there seems to be less storage space compared to the Oasis Class ships. For example, the use of baskets instead of traditional drawers seems to address a problem that wasn’t really an issue, resulting in fewer practical storage options for passengers.
Another area for improvement is the scheduling of performances on the Royal Promenade. The staggered timing of shows often causes issues, especially with noise. On many evenings, live music in venues like the Schooner Bar, Pub, or Boleros ends too early due to concerns about sound bleeding into other areas. While Royal Caribbean aimed to create a lively atmosphere on the Royal Promenade, the current setup may limit the overall experience for passengers.

The choice of having only one entrance and exit for Absolute Zero, which flows through Playmakers Sports Bar, is another puzzling design decision.
However, despite these quirks, they don’t overshadow the fact that Icon of the Seas is not only my favorite Royal Caribbean cruise ship but also represents a significant advancement in the cruise industry.
